Signal Recognition Particle (SRP) and SRP Receptor: A New Paradigm for Multistate Regulatory GTPases
The GTP-binding proteins or GTPases comprise a superfamily of proteins that provide molecular switches in numerous cellular processes. The “GTPase switch” paradigm, in which a GTPase acts as a bimodal switch that is turned “on” and “off” by external regulatory factors, has been used to interpret the regulatory mechanism of many GTPases for more than two decades. Nevertheless, recent work has unveiled an emerging class of “multistate” regulatory GTPases that do not adhere to this classical paradigm. Instead of relying on external nucleotide exchange factors or GTPase activating proteins to switch between the on and off states, these GTPases have the intrinsic ability to exchange nucleotides and to sense and respond to upstream and downstream factors. In contrast to the bimodal nature of the GTPase switch, these GTPases undergo multiple conformational rearrangements, allowing multiple regulatory points to be built into a complex biological process to ensure the efficiency and fidelity of the pathway. We suggest that these multistate regulatory GTPases are uniquely suited to provide spatial and temporal control of complex cellular pathways that require multiple molecular events to occur in a highly coordinated fashion
Nano-electromechanical switchable photonic metamaterials
We introduce mechanically reconfigurable electrostatically-driven photonic metamaterials (RPMs) as a generic platform for large-range tuning and switching of photonic metamaterial properties. Here we illustrate this concept with a high-contrast metamaterial electro-optic switch exhibiting relative reflection changes of up to 72% in the optical part of the spectrum
Spin correlated interferometry for polarized and unpolarized photons on a beam splitter
Spin interferometry of the 4th order for independent polarized as well as
unpolarized photons arriving simultaneously at a beam splitter and exhibiting
spin correlation while leaving it, is formulated and discussed in the quantum
approach. Beam splitter is recognized as a source of genuine singlet photon
states. Also, typical nonclassical beating between photons taking part in the
interference of the 4th order is given a polarization dependent explanation.Comment: RevTeX, 19 pages, 1 ps figure, author web page at

From first-order magneto-elastic to magneto-structural transition in (Mn,Fe)1.95P0.50Si0.50 compounds
We report on structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of
MnxFe1.95-xP0.50Si0.50 (x > 1.10) compounds. With increasing the Mn:Fe ratio, a
first-order magneto-elastic transition gradually changes into a first-order
magneto-structural transition via a second-order magnetic transition. The study
also shows that thermal hysteresis can be tuned by varying the Mn:Fe ratio.
Small thermal hysteresis (less than 1 K) can be obtained while maintaining a
giant magnetocaloric effect. This achievement paves the way for real
refrigeration applications using magnetic refrigerants.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Supplemental Materia
Generation of frequency multiplexed entangled single photons assisted by the entanglement
We present a scheme to generate the frequency multiplexed entangled (FME)
single photons based on the entanglement between two species atomic mixture
ensemble. The write and reads fields driven according to a certain timing
sequence, the generation of FME single photons can be repeated until success is
achieved. The source might have significant applications in wavelength division
multiplexing quantum key distribution.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Single Molecule Michaelis-Menten Equation beyond Quasi-Static Disorder
The classic Michaelis-Menten equation describes the catalytic activities for
ensembles of enzyme molecules very well. But recent single-molecule experiment
showed that the waiting time distribution and other properties of single enzyme
molecule are not consistent with the prediction based on the viewpoint of
ensemble. It has been contributed to the slow inner conformational changes of
single enzyme in the catalytic processes. In this work we study the general
dynamics of single enzyme in the presence of dynamic disorder. We find that at
two limiting cases, the slow reaction and nondiffusion limits, Michaelis-Menten
equation exactly holds although the waiting time distribution has a
multiexponential decay behaviors in the nondiffusion limit.Particularly, the
classic Michaelis-Menten equation still is an excellent approximation other
than the two limits.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur
Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis
A case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis in a young Chinese male is reported. Attacks of paralysis ceased once the patient was rendered euthyroid on appropriate treatment. The features of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis are briefly outlined
